The MRC Laboratories. The Gambia is the Council’s largest establishment conducting medical research in a developing country. The Unit aims to improve the health of people in low income countries by excellence in multi-disciplinary research programmes. We have developed an exciting new research agenda to  reflect changes in national and global health priorities. Our new science portfolio is organized around three themes: Child Survival, Disease Control and Elimination and Vaccination.

We are looking for qualified candidate who will be based at Bansang in the Central River Region, He/she will be responsible for managing the epidemiological component of the 13-valent
pneumococcal conjugate vaccine effectiveness case-control study, He/she will provide clinical support to the team of Clinicians at the Bansang Hospital, Paediatric Ward and will be part of the Pneumococcal Vaccine evaluation team involved in a range of related clinical research activities.

Position:     Clinical Epidemiologist (Child Survival Theme – Pneumococcal Surveillance Project)



We seek someone with:

    * MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
    * FWACP Part 2
    * Master degree in Epidemiology or Public Health
    * Knowledge of the principles of epidemiological study design, data collection and analysis
    * Minimum of five years post-graduate clinical experience
    * Experience written and spoken English
    * Excellent communication skills.
    * Experience supervising staff.
    * Computer literacy in Windows, Word, Excel and statistical software.
    * Good record keeping skills.
    * Ability to apply epidemiology principles in the field.
    * Ability to identify and solve problems.
    * Ability to meet deadlines,
    * Ability to work well in a multi-disciplinary team including scientists and Gambian Government staff.
    * Willingness to work flexible hours and be on-call.
    * Willingness to live in a rural area with limited facilities.



The post will be to 31st December 2013 extendable by mutual agreement.



The salary will be in Occupational Group E3 at a minimum total salary package of 1,211675 Dalasis per annum before tax and 927,692 Dalasis per annum after tax. This converts to £20,615 per annum after tax using the prevailing Dalasis /Sterling exchange rate. The final salary within the E3 scale and will be dependent on qualifications and experience. Please note, however, that the salary package is paid in Dalasis and the sterling figure quoted is just given as a guide. For displaced staff the package will include rent-free furnished accommodation, flights, contribution to school fees and shipment of personal effects.
