The MRC Unit the Gambia is the Medical Research Council’s largest establishment conducting laboratory, field based and clinical research in a developing country. To reflect changes in national and global health parities and new International funding opportunities a new research portfolio has been organized under three themes: Child Survival: Disease Control and Elimination, Vaccinology. These themes have been selected to target national health needs, to reinforce sub-regional and international links and to address some of the major current priorities in the Millennium Global Health Goals.
We are looking for qualified candidate who will be responsible for designing and implementing a system of remote data entry and transfer throughout Fuladu West and the Basse HDSS in the Upper
River Region of The Gambia. The post-holder will design several databases for PSP using automated and online data entry and will also be responsible for designing managing, and analyzing the flow of data for the BHDSS, PSP and GEMS projects. He/she will be responsible for the supervision of data entry and management of all data sets generated for each of these projects. The post holder will also undertake data management activities in addition to the core role of database and data system development.
Position: Database Developer/Data Manager (Pneumococcal Surveillance Project, Basse Health and Demographic Surveillance System,)
We seek someone with:
* B.Sc equivalent in computing, data management or a related subject
* A minimum of 5 years experience in Data Management in a senior position
* Ability to deal accurately and efficiently with a large volume of data
* Good working knowledge of various database management software (MS access, SQLSERVER etc)
* Sound knowledge on SQL SERVER 2008/2005
* High ability to programme in VBA, VB, Net and ASP, Net and a good understanding of SQL scripting
* Knowledge of distributed data management and automated data entry systems is preferred
* Some knowledge in networking, especially VPN is preferred
* Systematic approach and attention to detail
* Experience with co-ordination of field studies.
* Experience in training and supervising staff,
* Excellent written and spoken English.
* Excellent communication skills.
* Excellent organizational and managerial skills
* Ability to work co-operatively in a team.
* Understanding of the confidential nature of the work.
* Willingness to acquire further computing skis.

* Previous experience of managing a geographic information system using any mapping software.
The post will be for 3 years.
The salary will be in Occupational Group E1 within the salary range 585,113 Dalasis per annum to 805,004 Dalasis per annum before tax and 462,216 Dalasis per annum to 632,308 Dalasis per annum after tax. This converts to £10271 per annum to £14051 per annum after tax using the current Dalasis/Sterling exchange rate dependent on qualifications and experience. Please note, however, that the
Salary package is paid in Dalasis and the sterling figure quoted is just given as a guide. For displaced staff the package will include rent-free furnished accommodation, flights, contribution to school fees and shipment of personal effects.
