STAFF MEDICAL OFFICER

The MRC Unit, The Gambia is the Medical Research Council’s largest establishment conducting laboratory, field-based and clinical research in a developing country. The Unit aims to improve the health of people in development, testing and safe adoption of morbidity and mortality from infectious diseases.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates to fill the post of Staff Medical Officer to be based at MRC Fajara. This is an ideal for a children trained in family medicine who wishes to work in a very well-resourced clinic setting, supported by excellent on-site diagnostics and an acute medical service for both adults and children. The post-holder will be responsible for the clinical care of staff and their families under the direction of the Head of Clinical Services. In addition to working in the staff Clinic and general Outpatients Department, he/she will also be required to spend some time working on the MRC Ward.

Essential Requirements:

·       MB BS or equivalent medical qualification

·       FWACP in family medicine/MRCGP or equivalent.

·       Minimum of three years experience working in high-quality teaching institutions.

·       Excellent record keeping skills.

·       Excellent written & spoken English.

·       Proven experience of managing staff.

·       Good understanding of medical audits

·       Computer literacy in Windows-Word, Excel & email.

·       Ability to deal sensitively with patients.

·       Ability to work well in a multi-disciplinary team

·       Excellent communication skills.

·       Willingness to work on the on-call rota on a regular basis.

Preferred:

·       Advanced Life Support Provider.

·       Interest in Clinical Research into the diseases of the tropics.

An attractive salary will be paid. For displaced staff the package will include furnished accommodation, flights, contribution to school fees for children and other benefits. The appointment is for two years and extendable by mutual agreement.
