POSITION DESCRIPTION


CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER


ORGANIZATION:
ECWA Hospital Egbe, a division of ECWA (Evangelical Churches of Western Africa), is a rural hospital located in Egbe, Kogi State, Nigeria. As a 121-bed, multi-service facility, the hospital complex is comprised of approximately 33 acres with 68 buildings, and a staff of 69. The complex includes outpatient/inpatient wards, operating theatre, maternity, laboratory, pharmacy, eye clinic, NIV/Aids clinic, nursing and midwifery schools, administration, maintenance facility, library, internet café and staff housing. In 2009, the hospital served 15,565 outpatients, 1,845 inpatients, and performed 305 deliveries and 398 operations.

 Glorify God through provision of holistic health care services with the intent and purpose of advancing the Kingdom of God through excellent patient care and the demonstration of the Christ-like lives of its staff.


THE HOSPITAL’S VISION IS:
 As a multi-service facility, to provide emergency/intensive care services, general medical, surgical , and maternity services, eye care and diagnostic services, comprehensive HIV/AIDS prevention care and support services, TB DOTS services, nursing care, and pharmaceutical care services.
 To offer a consolidated family medicine, nurse, and midwifery training center within a well maintained and clean environment with up-to-date equipment that makes ECWA Hospital Egbe a first choice hospital in the five neighboring states because of prompt and excellent services.
 To be one of the first three residency programs in Nigeria with well trained and motivated staff providing patient-centered services with the commitment to glorifying God in her works.


POSITION:
The Chief Medical Officer will develop, coordinate and oversee all medical staff activities at ECWA Hospital Egbe working in collaboration with the Director of Administration, administrative team, and missionary consultants. The Chief Medical Officer is responsible for the supervision and training of doctors, residents, and medical students; participation in the development of patient care programs and standards for existing and new services; oversight of quality and performance improvement activities of the medical staff and hospital; participation in case management and utilization review activities; aid in physician/intern recruitment; and participation in the development of clinical documentation programs.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides leadership to ECWA Hospital Egbe in the implementation of patient care management programs Ensures that ECWA Hospital Egbe operates in accordance with its purposes and vision, and in line with the purpose and vision of ECWA/SIM (Serving in Mission) and the laws of Nigeria Oversees, directs and supports the rendering of medical management decisions that maximize patient care Monitors effectiveness of health care practices and productivity indicators Encourages collaboration between medical staff, Nurses and Midwifery Training schools in the provision of patient care and staff development In collaboration with the Director of Administration, takes responsibility for all hospital staff and in providing adequate care and support for expatriate staff at Egbe Participates in professional meetings and represents the hospital in a professional, competent manner in the community as required Demonstrates effective leadership skills of delegation, organization, and coordination of the hospital departments Assures the ongoing development and implementation of policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of medical staff services Develops an effective process for staff recruitment, development and retention Provides training as required to physician interns and residents Ensures appointment of medical staff is compliant with sound credentialing practices Encourage collaboration between ECWA/SIM ministries, synergies with hospital and teaching facilities located in Nigeria Participates in the development of new medical service opportunities that meet diagnostic and patient care needs


QUALIFICATIONS:
Holds to the beliefs and faith of the Evangelical Churches of West Africa Current license to practice medicine in Nigeria Current certification from a specialty board in Nigeria, Family Medicine (preferred) or Surgery Demonstrated ability to provide physician leadership with 3-5 years experience in a competitive health care facility – highly preferred Demonstrated competency in exercising executive authority Knowledge of medical staff organization and structure, outcomes-based quality of care, clinical effectiveness and performance improvement Cross cultural experience in working with consultants from other states/countries Excellent interpersonal skills to foster collaborative partnerships in delivering quality care


NON-NEGOTIABLES: Must be a medical doctor; preferably with area of specialty in Family Practice or General Surgery
