Research Clinician
(Control of Neonatal Infections)
The MRC Unit, The Gambia is the
Council’s largest establishment conducting medical research in a developing
country. The Unit aims to improve the health of people in low-income countries
by excellence in multi-disciplinary research programmes.
We are seeking applications from
experienced and suitably qualified candidates for the post of a Research
Clinician for the Control of Neonatal infections project based at MRC Fajara.
The trial is aimed at evaluating the impact of an intervention given to women
during the pregnancy period on the mother and newborn’s health. The post-holder
will be required to run and supervise the trial. Both mother s and newborns
will be followed for a few months after delivery and biological samples
collected at regular intervals.
We seek someone with:

MB
B or equivalent.
ü
Experience
in conducting Clinical Trials.
ü
Experience
in managing field teams.
ü
Experience
working with infants, preferably newborns.
ü
Excellent
interpersonal and written/spoken English.
ü
Excellent
IT skills (Word, Excel and Access).
ü
Commitment
to working in a multi-disciplinary team.
ü
Flexible
and well organised approach to work and an ability to meet deadlines.
ü
The
ability to deal sensitively with patients and study participants.
ü
The
ability to be attentive to detail.
ü
Willingness
to work flexible hours and be on-call.
The salary will be in Occupational
Group E1. The salary range for E1 is from 565, 328 Dalasi per annum to 774, 188
Dalasi per annum after tax. This converts to a salary range of $17, 131- $23,
460 per annum after tax using the current Dalasi/USD exchange rate. Please
note, however, that the salary package is paid in Dalasis and the USD figure
quoted is just given as a guide. The final salary on the occupation group £1
will be dependent on qualifications and experience.
For displaced staff the package will
include furnished accommodation, flights, contribution to school fees for
children and other benefits.
The appointment will be for 12 months.
